Hawaiʻi English Language Program


The Hawai’i English Language Program (HELP) has been providing quality Academic English and teacher training courses at UH Mānoa since 1971. For over four decades, students from around the world have studied at HELP and have gained Conditional Admission to undergraduate and graduate study at UH Mānoa and other campuses in the UH system. As a research unit of the renowned Department of Second Language Studies (SLS) at UH Mānoa, HELP has an innovative approach to instructional design. HELP’s curriculum prepares students with the linguistic, critical thinking, and cultural skills they need to succeed in an American higher education institution in Hawaii or elsewhere. We also offer short-term teacher training workshops for pre-service and in-service teachers of English, and are proud to offer the CELTA certificate in English Language Teaching course four times per year. Students of all levels—from beginning to advanced academic English—find success and achieve their academic goals with our HELP!

University of Hawaiʻi – Kapiʻolani Community College


Nestled on the slopes of Diamond Head along the southern shores of Oahu, Kapi’olani Community College is conveniently located minutes away from world-famous Waikiki Beach and is one of 10 campuses in the University of Hawai’i system. Kapi’olani is a two-year accredited educational institution offering associate degrees and certificates in more than 22 fields, including specialties in Culinary Arts, Travel & Tourism and Hospitality Management, Business Education, Health Science, New Media Arts, Information Technology, STEM and Liberal Arts. With a major emphasis on international education, Kapi’olani serves over 700 international students from more than 40 countries and over 8,000 total students. As a comprehensive community college, Kapi’olani has many programming strengths, including programs in English as a Second Language (ESL) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). We also offered a unique undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree Pathway program. The Maui Language Institute (MLI) is an English as a Second Language (ESL) program that is part of UHMC. MLI is designed to engage international and local students with English language instruction for academic purposes and for professional advancement. MLI offers an array of unique English learning opportunities. Regular Programs offer individuals intensive 6- and 8-week courses. Custom Programs offer organizations customized training for groups. Services offered to MLI students include placement, orientation, and counseling for academic, cultural, and personal purposes. Students have full use of the UH Maui College facilities including the library, The Learning Center, student health center, and computer labs. Students are given email accounts and are welcome to participate in campus activities and clubs.
