About Institution

Academia Language School was founded by Joseph and Magda Alexander in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1969. Since then, Academia has grown to become the largest language school on the Islands. Academia instructors now teach over 25 different languages at our school, in corporate offices, and in government facilities.

English (ESL) is our largest department. Students come from around the world and enjoy the opportunity to learn English in the classroom as well as experience English immersion in beautiful Hawaii. Some students come to Academia to prepare for an academic program at an English speaking university or for career advancement. Others come to practice conversation or learn a language for their personal growth.

We have designed our curriculum with these varied student goals in mind – we offer students a wide range of courses as well as the ability to design an individualized course of study. In addition, students can choose a class schedule that fits their personal schedule. Choice is important to our students, so it is important to us. At Academia, we also seek to provide the best value to our students. We strive to keep our tuition as low as possible to provide the opportunity to learn English and other languages to as many students as possible.

Academia’s approach to teaching languages is interactive. Teachers are selected not only for their knowledge and experience, but also for their ability to connect with students as individuals. Teachers are encouraged to be as creative as they can in making the language learning experience fun and exciting – which leads to better learning!

Academia also frequently designs custom language programs for individuals, business and government agencies. If you have a unique language training need, please contact us and we will work with you to design a program with the best language instructors available. We also provide a full range of translation and interpretation services.
